SELF-PORTRAIT

2020.09

The composition and the color of the middle painting produce visual confusion by mixing the characters and backgrounds and achieving a depressive balance. The crane represents a conflict between my broken hopes and endless wishes. The spots represent my body hair, a normal trait that I should not be ashamed of. The facial coverings by small mask-like faces illustrate the complicated dynamics of my different personalities. The black face floating in the air indicates the desire for freedom of "me," my soul, and the inescapable reality of its inseparableness from the physical body. The screens symbolize the barrier between myself and the truth.

In the painting on the right, I use a subtler and brighter tone to be more comprehensible. The special drawing techniques in Dunhuang murals inspired my painting style. The consistency between the murals and the subjects' lines in my painting indicates my resemblance to the flying Buddhist as freely drifting on the wave.
