COMPROMISE
2020.7
Materials: Oil on canvas
Size:12*16 inches
Self-compromise is the theme of these three paintings. I at first struggled with my uncontrollable desires, but I then realized that desire could never be eliminated and found it an utterly inseparable part of myself. I should therefore learn to tolerate it.
The painting in the middle is the phase before this compromise. The strong contrast between red, green, and gold demonstrates my fierce struggle with the world and myself. In the painting on the left, I am drawn into a state of confusion demonstrated through the lighter tone and gray stripes. After a long period of confusion, I make a compromise in the painting on the right. The overall tone gives people a sense of both comfort and helplessness.
In these three paintings, there are two people symbolizing my two voices. One of them wishes to compromise, but the other wants to escape. The bubble that embraces both of them is the sum of all the limitations that I cannot break.
